Korean Art History of late, especially in the years 2010 and 2011, has flourished both in quality and quantity. With people’s strong propensity for higher level education well-known globally, academic environment in Korea has become democratized and popularized. Art history is no longer the luxury of the upper class but rather, is becoming more closely connected with everyday lives of all Koreans; it can now be adequately called the “Everyday Art History.” The sheer extent of the various introductory literatures written by the professionals for the public illustrates this trend. This trend will positively influence the general public, refining their artistic sensibility, propelling them to globalize Korean culture and improving overall quality of life in Korea. However, striking a balance between the appeal for popularity and keen professionalism remains to be a crucial issue. On closer analysis, the major portion of researches was devoted to paintings. In content, court paintings, portraits, and folk paintings were actively researched and period-wise, many focused on late Joseon dynasty. In the field of Buddhist painting, there was continued attention to Goryeo and early Joseon buddhist paintings but with regards to the quantity, works on late Joseon prevailed. Studies on buddhist sculptures inquired on the works from Unified Silla and the achievements of late Joseon monk sculptors and their schools. Many ceramics researches dealt with ceramics of Goryeo and early Joseon dynasty. A notable accomplishment was made in ceramics field, with the publication of the Underwater Excavation Research conducted by the National Research Institute of the Maritime Cultural Heritage. The research dealt with findings at the Taean-gun area located at the coast of the Yellow Sea and provided indispensable novel information for the study of Goryeo ceramics.
