This is a critical reflection on the modern Christian subject through postcolonial critiques to locate its relationship with the modernity and its project, and to find the inner-connectedness in philosophy and ideology between missionary projects and modern colonialism. It also attempt to reveal the suppression and discrimination mechanism on ‘different and other’ that was deeply imbedded in the modernity and its philosophical system ? epistemology and ontology, and to expose totalizing and homogenizing tendency also in theological system, through the critical reflection with the thoughts of Emmanuel Levinas and his arguments on the Other. In attempting to conceive the “other” in different way, it suggests engaging and alternative way of articulating of ‘other’, placed not in epistemological project but in ethical-relationship; it means to challenge the totalizing tendency of Western philosophy that denies different others, to break out from its narcissism, and to place its subject in relation with the other in ethical way.
Therefore, it proposes the ethical response to the calling of the other as the departing point, rather than the epistemological understanding of the other ? ethics over epistemology, and to re-orient our theological/philosophical discourse in the ethics for other. Moreover, the ethical responsibility for the other would bring new understanding of God who left his traces in the people, meaning that the new ethical and me-ontological understudying of God commands new relationship with other people. It suggests that ethical responsibility ought to be at the attitude of theology and Christian missions toward the world, in solidarity with people, and emphasize that the church as new subject is born into the responsibility of the others-the Eucharistic subjectivity for the other.
