The religious topography is closely connected with the its external social and historical situation such as the advent of the government, and the internal capacity of religious groups. In this paper, I focus on the topography of religion in Korea society based on the historical comparison. Generally speaking, the change of religious topography in Korea had been occurred in a real earnest with the opening of a port in the Chosun dynasty of the Yi kings. In the latter half of the 19th century, the breakdown of Confucian order, the weak of religious function of Buddism, the positive propagation of Christianity(Catholicism and Protestantism), and the rise of new religions such as Donghak had affected the change of religious topography in Korea. However, after the 1945 liberation of Korea, the religious topography has been changed according to the directivity of national and social policies such as the nation-state building and economic development, the establishment of democratic and civil society and so on. In this paper, centered on Christianity and Buddhism, I claim that there exist five periods such as the establishment of nation-state and the change of religious topography, industrialism and the growth of religions, the spread of democratic ideology and the identity of religions, the extension of mass society and the change of religious market, and the expansion of neo-liberalism and the response of religions. In short, it is obvious that the direction of religions should be one of the most important factors affecting the Korean society.
