This paper is a study on the criticism of mass literature in 1976-1980. The purpose of this paper is to study the various criticism of mass literature in 1976-1980and turn out the achievements and limitations of those types in view of criticism history.
In the 1970s, "The media" and "the mass" were formed. As a result, the mass literature had been emerged as the central force in the Korean literature. In addition, mass literatures with high literary quality was commercially successful. As a result, after the late 1970s, Korean critics actively discussed mass literature which the Korean literary world had firmly excluded, and had a new appreciation for Mass Literature. However, the newspaper serial novels were falling low, so some Korean critics strongly criticized mass literature.
On the other hand, as the newspaper serial novel were wide-spreaded and mass-production items became the best-sellers. There were a lot of criticisms about newspaper serial novels and the problem of commercialisms in the Korean literary world. The criticisms of newspaper serial novels had been discussed richly, reevaluating the achievements and limitations of the newspaper serial novels. But the criticism of the novel commercialism in the late 1970s was linked to a novel argument about commercialism in 1980. However, in that time, positive view of the mass literature disappeared and negative view of the mass literature Strengthened.
Many achievements from the criticism of mass literature in the 1976-1980 have influence on popular literature these days and should not be overlooked with importance of the history of criticism. In that point of view, it is maintained as a basic of Korean popular literature.
