The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between depression of old people and suicidal ideation focusing on the moderating effects of social participation and preparation for aging, and to provide empirical basis to prevent suicide of the elderly. For this purpose, this study utilized the data from ‘2010 Seoul Welfare Panel’ administered by Seoul Welfare Foundation and analyzed 1,429 people over 65 years old living in Seoul. The result showed that firstly, depression is correlated positively with suicidal ideation. Secondly, social participation and preparation for aging moderate the relation of depression and suicidal ideation. The implication of these findings suggests that developing and improving infrastructure for preparing education and counselling considering the characteristics of the elderly. Thus, this study suggests the importance of managing depression, social participation and preparation for aging.
