In recent years, tooth bleaching has become one of the most rapidly growing oral care sectors. Hydrogen peroxide, which is the main component of bleaching agents, has been known to affect teeth through many different mechanism, one of which is to decrease mechanical and physical properties of tooth as well as restorative materials. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect that various concentrations (3~30%) and application time (3~10 days) of hydrogen peroxide. Four kinds of restorative materials were experimented; Filtex supreme for a nanofill, Spectrum THP for hybrid, Unifill flow for flowable and F2000 for compomer. All specimens were polished sequentially from #600 to #1200 emery paper and buffer clothes with 0.3 μm alumina paste. The specimens were placed in sterile whole stimulated saliva overnight at 37℃ for 72 hours in order to form an in vitro pellicle layer. Then the specimens were rinsed with distilled water and soaked into black coffee at 37℃ for 7 days. These stained specimens were bleached with hydrogen peroxide according to various concentrations and application time. The specimens were analyzed with spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscope (SEM), surface roughness tester and Barcol hardness tester. The result showed that the bleaching effect was increased with increasing the concentration and application period of hydrogen peroxide. The surface roughness was significantly increased from bleaching with 15% and 30% hydrogen peroxide for 10 days (P<0.05). Barcol hardness was significantly decreased from bleaching with 15% and 30% hydrogen peroxide according to increasing time (P<0.05). The surface micro structure of 4 specimens were not significantly difference. The results of this study should be considered in clinical application of tooth bleaching.
