Prolonged sitting posture can cause unnatural lumbar curvature and high disc pressure consequently sitting is responsible for musculorskeletal discomfort. Ergonomic recline chairs are commonly used in order to reduce user’s disc pressure and improve sitting comfort. Especially synchronized tilt mechanism featured linked seat and back angles are mainly used. In this study existing synchronized tilt mechanism was classified into several types based on the combination of parts and joints. The purpose of this study was to analyze the human recline motions that are affected by changes in tilt mechanism. Chair and human seating system was modeled based on eight of existing office chairs and recline simulation was performed. To observe recline movement markers were set at the shoulder, hip, knee and ankle joints of body and at the front and rear seat. Four types of kinematic characteristic were observed containing stay, forward, backward and upward motion at the front seat. Hip and knee motions were revealed significant correspondence to the seat motion. The influence of characteristic of knee and hip motions on the sitting comfort and musculorskeletal health is remained further study.
