This paper handles the problems of argumentative writing. Especially, this paper is focused on the problems of objection acceptance and argumentation structure. For approaching these problems, this paper first considered a correlation between argumentative writing and critical thinking. Moreover, this paper examined the utility and limit of the existing argumentation structure. In this process, it was found that objection acceptance was the most crucial problem in argumentative writing.
Accordingly, this paper introduced and looked into the theories of Joseph Williams and Gregory Colomb who approach the problems of objection acceptance in argumentative writing, most closely. They are worthy of notice in the way that they are accepting the problems of objection acceptance aggressively, compared to other argumentation structures. This paper suggested the "finger technique-based argumentation structure" in order to remind of the argumentation structure model claimed by them.
The "finger technique-based argumentation structure" was revealed to be fairly effective for 5-paragraph argumentative writing, when students practiced writing using it. As a result, it was supposed that the argumentation method proposed by Williams and Colomb and the "finger technique-based argumentation structure" could apply to diverse humanistic writing activities, too. It is anticipated that this paper would make a contribution to the improvement in argumentative writing skills of students.
