A museum is a specific space where people through various mass media encounter the past, different lives and cultures, and the place where we can best understand our history. History that is reproduced in a museum is likely to be ‘the’ historical information that becomes the ‘truth’. This is why the Korean Council has made strenuous efforts to establish its own museum since from the initial stage of its organization. After all the issues of fund??raising, acquiring land, surmounting negative and hostile responses from Korean and Japanese rightist nationalists, the War and Women’s Human Rights Museum finally opened after nine years struggle on 5th May 2012, on the slopes of Mt. Seomgmi, Seoul. Even though the creation of the image of a girl and her forcefully destroyed life depicted as one of the numerous ‘comfort women’ has been controversial, the image dominates the entire display of the museum. However, displays showing the history of the comfort women, history of the council, war in the world, violence, gender issue are too comprehensive and loose the interest of the viewers. In order to make the display area a place for living for a place of, understanding, and appreciating the victims of the war, the museum needs to be a more culturally friendly place beyond one for remembrance, healing, and recording history.
