The Culture-Protestantism is one of the theological themes that are, in this country, rarely investigated. The commonly disregarding assessment on this theological tendency of 19<SUP>th</SUP> century bases on the reception of the critical view point of the theologians who war critical to it. According to usual assessment, the Culture-Protestantism was nothing but a misleading theological tendency which failed to recognize the difference between culture and religion. It is said that the inquiry of ‘synthesis’ of Gospel and culture consequently fell into war theology which was finally subdued by the Dialectical Theology.
In this paper, the Culture-Protestantism is defined as a religious, theological and practical attempt initiated by liberally educated civil class (Bildungsburgertum). Contrary to the common sense, the Culture-Protestantism tried to prevent the German protestantism of the 19th century from clinging to the premodern cultural forms of Christian faith, and it also attempted to ‘reform’ the secular culture of German Empire according to the protestant principle which is regarded as an immanent principle of the development of German culture. The reaction of the Culture-Protestantism to political, social and cultural changes in the German Empire dominated by nationalism had its foundation on that protestant principle.
