The German Jewry remained until the late eighteenth century not a minority but a “stranger” group, as called by Georg Simmel. They were subject to a variety of the discriminatory measures, but enjoyed a variety of the privileges as well under the auspice of the Emperor. They became in the beginning of the nineteenth century a minority, as the German needed a discoursive adversary as a repulsive screen, on which the German projected their ideal self-portrait. As a result, the Jewry came to enjoy the full citizenship, but they were defined by the German as a absolute adversary.
The German Jewry endeavored successfully to become the German, which was revealed by the fact that they ranked high in the German bourgeoise society. This study interprets the successes of the German Jewry not from a essentialist, but a formative perspective. They adapted to the German bourgeoise ideal so perfectly as to become German. But they suffered from the self-hatred, caused by the parallel process of their assimilatory efforts and the sociable and cultural discrimination by the German. The jewish self-hatred was reflected in the criticisms of the native Jewry against the Jewry from East Europe. The criticisms were a pure repetition of the criticism which the German leveled against the German Jewry.
