The Bishop, who was at the scene of various political events such as the First Sino-Japanese War, the Gabo Reform of 1894, and the assassination of Min-bi, took a great interest in political, diplomatic affairs and recorded them in his travel log. However, the content of the log has an orientalism viewpoint and contains the Bishop’s identity as an Englishman. The Bishop thought that Korea`s reform needed outside help since there was a lack of governing ability and believed Japan to be a better guardian country than Russia, England`s enemy. This is because he thought that England`s interests in East-Asia would become endangered if a strong enemy country took possession of Korea. Also, judging from improvements in transportation and Korean preference surveys, he claimed that in the event of the development of Korean trade, though Japan would be a strong rival, England would still be able to see a certain amount of profit.
