This article seeks to revise the overall images of economics in Taiwan since 1945, especially from 1945 to 1949 by focusing on the question of the supplementation of technical manpower. The addition of laborers had three main origins: legacies of the wartime economy, the conscription of Japanese technicians, and the transfusion of workers from mainland China. Each origin played a significant role in the takeoff of Taiwan’s economy from 1945, which implies that the “Mainland” factor and the “Japan” factor should not be underestimated.
I found that seen from the supplementing addition of technical manpower, the post-liberation Taiwanese economy had several origins. Among these, we cannot neglect the contributions of high-level technicians who had relocated from the mainland to the rebuilding of the economy, in addition to the contributions made by less skilled Taiwanese technicians and by highly skilled Japanese technicians.
This may suggest that we not only have to review images of disorder and disarray during the period from 1945 to 1949, but also that we cannot describe the images of poat-liberation Taiwanese history as a collision between ethnic groups, but may describe it rather as a collaboration between Chinese from the Mainland (waishengren , 外省人) and Taiwanese (benshengren , 本省人).
