Thus, this paper provides a detailed discussion of linguistic minority students’ heritage language and cultural identity maintenance, with a specific focus on North American countries due to the multilingual and multicultural aspect of these countries through a thorough review of literature relating to heritage language and cultural identity maintenance. Furthermore, this paper also discusses implications for multicultural education in Korea focusing on linguistic minority students" heritage language maintenance as an essential element for the successful settlement of the national multiculturalism in Korea. Overall, this paper argues that heritage language maintenance has substantial advantages and the linguistic diversity should be recognized as resources both in North America and in Korea.
