The paper examines effects of phonetic enhancement made by speech clinicians when they communicate with speech and language impaired children. The clinicians read short scripts that depict a picture to children with speech and language disorder. Acoustic analyses are done with respect to mean F0 values, pitch range, F1 and F2 of target vowels, phone and word duration of target words, and duration of phrase-final words in an utterance. Results show that while features related to F0 and duration reveal significant effects of phonetic enhancements, no such differences were observed in the acoustic measurements of vowel space. The results imply that speech clinicians use cues for drawing children’s attention more than cues for conveying linguistic message.
