In the democratic and political life of western countries, SNS has played a positive role in civic participation. Recently, the political change in Middle East reminded people of its positive role and there is an increasing focus on its social influence. The academic research on SNS is from different dimensions and perspectives in the world, while in China, despite of some research on “social capital in SNS space”, it remains usually in theoretical domain, which means, the empirical study on issue of “the influence of the application of SNS on social capital in realistic space” is not enough. This research, which is based on the questionnaires of university students, the main users of SNS in China, analyzed the nature of bridging and bonding network formed among the netizens in SNS space, and tried to find out how the university students’ use of SNS affects participatory social capital such as their friendship activity, civic participation, social movement and opinion participation. The result of this research shows, among university students in China is formed the nature of bridging network, which is helpful to the formation of participatory social capital. However, this nature of bridging network only affects obviously their superficial social life such as “friendship activity” and “opinion participation”, but not their deep social participation of society and politics.
