Gilsang Munjado is a kind of drawing realizing auspicious aspirations or dreams which are potential in human-being. The characters with good auspicious signs are Su, Bok, Gang, Ryeong, Jeong, Bu, Gui, and Heui in Chinese letters. They have rich implications such as Longevity, Good Fortune, Good Nature, Fidelity, Wealth and High Status. These characters are written or embroidered in scrolls or folding screens to wish for a fortunate and glorious life, and not only have the purpose of decoration but also have incantational functions.
Therefore, this study aims to rebuild a modern image of Korean pictorial patterns. To do this, firstly, the study uses the Korean pictorial ideograph as a cultural archetype, and it analyzes the characteristics of its forms through a theoretical consideration with a literature and empirical artifact analyses. Secondly, it develops a culture based textile which forms a contemporary Korean design as well as the tradition of traditional culture, based on this result. Thirdly, the ultimate aims is to use them to develop fashion cultural products.
That is, after the study develops motifs and patterns based on Su-Bok ja which is found most often out of Gilsang Munjado, it produces textile through desktop publishing, and it uses them to make fashion cultural products as household items.
