This article examines what kind of changes are brought in novels by the emergence of new media, by paying attention to the identity of novels that should not be changed even with this situation. Novels on the Internet began to be published in earnest from 2007. Full-length serial novels that had published in papers and magazines appeared in series on Internet websites, and then were published as books.
Serial Internet novels are much contributed to the popularization of the genre of novel. The running of novels in earnest on the Internet has been contributed to the extension of literary readers and the mass-production of full-length novels. On the other hand, writers have come to be consolidated by people and at the same time recognize readers" tastes as people"s reactions are shown in real time. In that process, writers are in danger of missing tension with the world.
Writers who create original novels should be concerned with invisible "existing readers" rather than clinging to "visible readers." Those sets of works that don"t lose colors over time and space could just form the history of literature and meet future readers as well as current readers. While considering readers, writers should not miss the tension with the world fist of all. If literature were inclined to commercialization in the scheme of the market capitalism, its values in resisting the pressure of reality would gradually vanish.
