There are many articles written about the way of seeing and interpreting the Vietnam War in Korean literature. However, not many of them relate to the ways of seeing the Vietnam War in other areas such as U.S. and Vietnam. In this respect, it is important to study the Okinawa literature about the Vietnam War. The United States regarded Okinawa as important locality to block the spread of communism in Asia, and after World War II they established air bases on the island. During the Vietnam War, many airstrikes in Vietnam were made from Okinawa, and American troops arrived and departed via Okinawa. The Okinawan novelist Matayoshi Eiki wrote a short story about U.S. soldiers of the Vietnam War who spent their leave in Okinawa bars. He describes the inner mind of a soldier who kills another soldier and we can readily see an Asian imagination in his story that invokes the strong relationship between the U.S. and other countries such as Japan, Vietnam, Korea and Okinawa. We cannot find this kind of point of view in Korean writers. Korean writers who wrote about the Vietnam War have only dealt with the relationship between Vietnam and Korea. Matayoshi Eiki who deals with people and an incident within 2 kilometers of his home imagined Asia as inclusive in the Vietnam War. It was possible to imagine Asia and the world through Okinawa because it was key place of collision between the United States and Asia.
