Purpose: This qualitative study aimed to understand the uniqueness of a long-term care facility and to investigate its nursing practices for the elderly. Methods: Data were collected by close observations and the in-depth interviews using non-structured questionnaires with 7 nurses of a long-term care facility from October to December, 2012. The key question was "What are your experiences in the long-term care facility?". Data were analyzed by the qualitative content analysis. Results: There were structural and emotional circumstances, members, and relationships in the long-term care facility. The nursing traits of the long-term care facility could be characterized as the following four domains: ‘The field of life; The understanding of place", ‘Subject of care; The understanding of the elderly", ‘Provider of care; The roles of nurses who performed wholistic nursing", ‘Surroundings of nursing; Expand the scope of nursing". Conclusion: Based on these results, it is seen that a proper and realistic understanding about the long-term care facility is needed, which is expected to be used as a basis for developing the intervention measures that are appropriate to unique traits of the long-term care facility nursing.
