This paper is focused on the ideas of the Northern Learning(Bukhak) maintained by Yi Hui-gyeong and Bak Je-ga, two of the most ardent advocates of the learning in the Yeonam group, and concludes that their discourse was not meant to worship only what is here and now. On the contrary, they stressed the importance of achievements and teachings from ancient sages and tried to provide absolute authority to their ideas. Ironically, it was the absolute authority given to the ancient ideas that led Yi Hui-gyeong and Bak Je-ga to worshipping the present. The two scholars had an absolute trust in the teachings of ancient sages and tried to follow them in their everyday lives. They also believed that the sacred teachings from ancient times had been handed over to their generation through the civilization blossomed in China, and stressed for their Korean readers the importance of learning from the heritage preserved and developed in China. It does not mean that Yi Hui-gyeong and Bak Je-ga had little interest in the systems formed by the ancient sages but, on the contrary, they had too much interest in them. The conclusion of this paper is that Yi Hui-gyeong and Bak Je-ga were keenly interested in learning and adopting social and cultural achievements made by their contemporaries in Qing China because they believed that these were the heritage developed from the absolute authority of the ancient sages they revered.
