Taiwan has witnessed an internal conflict derived from both a split identity between Taiwanese and mainlanders and a domestic controversy over unification and independence, which created a so-called ‘Taiwanese nationalism’ that remains an repressive mechanism for autocratic governance. But, these two factors aforementioned aside, a shadow of historical regrets of imperialism, colonialism, and cold-war system have incessantly tormented this island country. In the view of democratic-leftist intellectuals, Taiwan has still come under a threat from mainland China and an influence of America’s neo-colonialism following the Dutch, Japanese and the KMT’s rule, respectively. Under the circumstances, the critical intellectuals have been motivated to push for an intellectual campaign that features “post-imperialismㆍpost-colonialismㆍpost-cold-war,” particularly in the context of the East-Asian discourse in Korea. Specifically, they have been impressed with the view that the discourse in Korea draws much emphasis to the peripheral view of the region. It can be argued that the critical intellectuals seem to regard the East Asian discourse as a feasible way to cope with the Taiwan’s dilemma in the face of a strong pressure of the PRC.
