Korea and Taiwan are much alike, but they have differences. These two countries have no resemblance, but they share similarities. They have similarities in general, but they have differences in detail. In terms of the landscape of religion, there is all the difference between Korea and Taiwan. Yiguandao is competing with the Protestant church for the position of the country’s third largest religion in Taiwan. In contrast, Cheondogyo is barely surviving in Korea. After being under the colonization, both countries experienced the war caused by ideologies, passed the time of Anti-communism under the authoritarianism, and became a democratic country. Then, what caused the current status of these two religions(Yiguandao and Cheondogyo) in each country? During this period, in the circumstances, how did Yiguandao and Cheondogyo make their decisions? And, what their decisions brought about? The purpose of this study is to answer these questions. In order to achieve this, the study examines the relation of religion and the nation.
The responding strategy of religion to the authoritarian nation-state can be divided into two strategies - influence strategy and legitimization strategy Under the name of Anti-communism, Yiguandao and Cheondogyo were suppressed by both nations. As a result of this suppression, the fate of Yiguandao and Cheondogyo was like “Candle in the wind.” In other words, the future of these religions was hanging on the balance. On this situation, in order to survive, two religions applied dif ferent strategies. Yiguandao adopted the influence strategy and Cheondogyo adopted the legitimization strategy. As a result of this strategic difference, Cheondogyo that actively engaged in the politics under the name of doctrine called “Gyojeongssangjeon” became busy trying to save their fate for the survival by distancing themselves from the politics. In the meantime, Yiguandao that initially had no interest in the politics ended up in the politics and rose above the bare existence.
