This paper attempts to study a particular expression, ‘righteousness and justice,’ ‘mishpat uzhedakah’ in Hebrew, in order to consider theological and practical implications of the so-called Sewol ferry tragedy from the viewpoint of covenantal theology. For this purpose, this paper reviews the etymology of righteousness and justice, and investigates the uses of this expression in the cases of covenantal passages such as Abrahamic covenant, Sainatic Covenant, and Davidic Covenant. In Abrahamic covenant, ‘righteousness and justice’ implies that the covenant-recipient establishes the reign of YHWH in reality, having attained the covenantal relationship with YHWH. The Sainatic covenant does not provide a detailed descriptions of ‘righteousness and justice.’ In Davidic covenant, ‘righteousness and justice’ means that the covenant-recipient maintains covenantal relationship with YHWH by establishing the reign of YHWH in his own leadership activity over the covenantal community. This set of information helps us to understand that ‘righteousness and justice’ in Old Testament covenant passages culminates in a principle of leadership, not only fruits of leaders’ activities. When the leaders learn what this principle means and thereby apply it to their leadership activities, the kingdom of YHWH will be widened and accomplished. Finally, this paper brings up some implications for Sewol ferry tragedy. ‘Righteousness and justice’ should be considered and reflected upon by all levels of leaders in the country, which will make further social, political, and even cultural developments in Korean context.
