This research aims to reveal how the market structure of fishery products changed and derive implications, through conducting a comparative analysis on the fishery products distribution structure in the channels of fisheries marketing during 1997 and 2012. A comprehensive study composed of South Korea’s food balance sheet, statistical data, research material and etc. were used for this research.
In addition, this research simplified the stages of distribution into producing area, wholesale and retail and derived implications and changes on the final distribution structure.
A summary of this research is as follows. In the distribution structure of fisheries, the market-share of off-board markets grew as the reliance on eatable imported fisheries increased greatly. And as the market-share of fisheries port markets and fisheries wholesale markets decreased, the bargaining power of producers got weaker and the influence of large retailers got stronger.
It seems that competitiveness in our fisheries industry will weaken as future dependence on imported fisheries increase and the size of off-market trading grow. The roles of producer organizations, fisheries port markets and fisheries wholesale markets need to be re-established.
