Korean word jogeum, which means ‘a bit’, is used as a noun or an adverb in sentences. Its word class conversions can be problematic when it comes to the dictionary description. On behalf of the most appropriate account on the word class conversions of jogeum, this paper attempts to classify example sentences in the existing Korean dictionaries and suggest the criteria for usage classification. Proper categorization of usages is important when building dictionaries as the definition of each entry depends upon the usage analysis. If we misclassify usages of headwords which have word class conversions like jogeum, it will directly affect the explanation of the words.
The current Korean dictionary descriptions of word class conversion words contain problems in two facets: its lack of consistency in one dictionary and misclassification of the usages. While the dictionary examples of jogeum meaning ‘short time’ should be considered as the usage of adverb jogeum, that meaning ‘small amount’ should be accounted as the usage of noun jogeum. Among the latter cases, if jogeum is followed by auxiliary particles or if it is used in a negative sentence, it should be considered as an adverb.
In the light of this, the current dictionary examples of noun jogeum should be reconsidered when accompanied by specific particles or used in limited sentence structures. Although the conceptual distinction of noun and adverb is clear, its boundary is somewhat unclear in actual usages. The analysis on the word class conversion words, which are widely observed in Korean, provides a useful ground to the study of Korean morphology.
