Henry David Thoreau makes the wilderness sublime to enhance the reader’s awareness of nature’s materiality in his essay “Ktaadn.” In “Ktaadn” written after traveling to Mt Ktaadn in Maine and published in 1848, Thoreau envisions a meeting with the mountain’s nature deity, who compels the narrator to respond with awe and wonder over material part of nature in a sublime mode. In this essay Thoreau closely associates the sublime and the wild. Although the sublime is typically understood as expression of the infinite, Thoreau presents it as something immediate, immanent, and tangible. Thoreau sustains the sublime in order to put nature above art and culture, making nature sacred in the process. Thoreau compels readers to reform their approach to the natural world. “Ktaadn” shows the destructive effects of the commercial exploitation of the natural landscape. Thoreau contrasts civilization to the wild and he identifies himself with the nature rather than society. Because the wild is opposite to civilization it takes on the characteristics of the sublime.
