The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between goal orientation and perfectionism in a sport-specific context and to examine how goal orientations and perfectionist orientations affect athlete burnout. Collegiate male rugby players (N = 113) completed the Sport Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, the Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire, the Athlete Burnout Questionnaire to assess perfectionist orientations, goal orientations, and athlete burnout in sport. Correlation analysis results indicated that task orientation was positively correlated with an adaptive profile of perfectionism whereas ego orientation was positively correlated with a maladaptive profile of perfectionism. Results of path analyses revealed that both ego orientation and maladaptive perfectionism were significantly associated witll athlete burnout. The results indicated that different types of goal orientations and perfectionist orientations respectively influence each other, and these personality profiles have different effects on athlete burnout. These findings support the previous studies, and the implications of the results suggest positive personality traits for athletes’ future success and better performance.
