Consumption expenditure patterns may vary with life-cycle stages of households or individuals, and corresponding financial structures may appear to vary with the stages. For this reason, life-cycle stages is very important in financial planning. Yet, most researche on life-cycle stages is based on traditional life-cycle stages.
The traditional life-cycle stages provide useful standards to explain consumption patterns for typical households. However, as society changes, the changes in population structure generate the various types of households even in the same life-cycle stages. Thus, it is necessary to investigate consumption expenditure patterns considering the various types of households in different life-cycle stages. In this context, the present study classifies a extended life-cycle stage considering the various types of households in modern society and examines consumption expenditure patterns based on the new classified life-cycle stages.
The major findings and conclusion of this study are as follows. First, the households were classified into 16 life cycle stages considering the household typology and life cycle stages. Household typology was classified into 4 types in terms of marital status and existence of children in the household, i.e., single household, childless-couple household, couples with children households, and single-parent households with children. The life cycle stages were divided into the stages of maturity, middle-age adulthood and retirement based on the age of the head of the household. In case of the middle-age adulthood stages and retirement stages with children were subdivided into households with dependent or independent children based on the employment status of their children. The findings indicated that each household type showed a different consumption expenditure pattern in each life-cycle stage. In addition, the households in the same life-cycle stages showed different consumption expenditure patterns by theirtype of households. The result implied that income and consumption expenditure patterns may affect the difference of the households in the same life-cycle stages. The result also implied that household typology should be considered in classifying life-cycle stages, which will be enable financial planners or households to set financial goals and planning customized to each household. Moreover, the life-cycle stages incorporating the household typology will facilitate the understanding of the most financially vulnerable type of households and life-cycle stages. The result would be helpful in policy setting and educational programs.
