Everyday life represents a methodology to discover social meaning from personal records and daily activities, and exposes how one accommodates or resists a system’s demands within the cast defined by the era. It thus resonates with the recent trend in the literature of attempting to understand “me” within the historical or social “context”. Research into everyday life exposes “the other within oneself” as equivocal, repetitive, and requiring decentration. This paper focuses on My Place and My Father’s Emails, two South Korean movies, as performative documentaries that represent the world we occupy through specific “performances” that narrate everyday life. Their directors seek to answer “what am I?” by “giving a narrative account of oneself”[1] and explaining the emergence of the self and identity through the matrix of ethics, morals, and worldviews existent within the small society that is the family. Judith Butler’s philosophical questioning [1] led to identification of the narrative account of oneself as a reflective agent within a context, and the two directors realize Butler’s claim that identity is a performative construct using performative documentary. This generates performative narrative through the appropriation of everyday life, which represents currently ongoing history; it attempts to understand the world, or at least explain it through “relevant and accurate depictions” [2].
