This study explored a theoretical model of L2 reading comprehension, building on the Construction Integration model (Kintsch, 1998). Among the major L1 reading theories reviewed, the Construction Integration model was adopted and expanded to explain L2 reading comprehension, since the model can define the roles of L2 proficiency and L1 reading competence. Three representation systems identified by the CI model (surface structure, textbase, and situation model) were explicated in terms of L1 and L2 reading comprehension, respectively. The ability to build textbase was proposed to be a function of L2 proficiency, while the ability to build a situation model was suggested to be a function of L1 reading competence. It was tested whether or not theoretically extracted constructs explain L2 reading comprehension using structural equation modeling. A total of 32 9th grade Korean students participated in the study. The various fit indices indicated that the proposed theory is a viable model to explain L2 reading comprehension.
