The form and meaning of a word, a phrase, and a sentence has been regarded as independent of each other, since Saussure (1916). However, the issue of iconicity in cognitive linguistics has challenged it. The purpose of this study is to explore the so-called “formal weight” in several syntactic and semantic constructions in English. In other words, this paper aims to find out the relationships between the formal weight and word order, and the formal weight and meaning. The results are twofold. One is that relative weight of two components in a sentence decides whether one of them is situated before the other component. That is to say, the lighter component goes before the heavier one. The other result is that of the two elements the heavier one has more complex meaning than the other one, which corresponds to the iconic principle of quantity, “something that carries more meaning is accorded more wording”.
