In this paper, I would like to introduce the life, public activities and theological concerns of Professor Ezra Kilsung Kim. This article is divided into two parts in addition to the introduction and closing remarks. In first part, I tried to introduce his life and public career as a prerequisite for understanding his theological thoughts properly. Professor Kim grew up in the parsonage of his Father who had ministered in the Korean Presbyterian Church. And he had studied and appropriated the ‘Korean Puritan Reformed Theology or Historic Reformed Theology’ established by the efforts of Professor Hyung-nong Park at the Chongshin Theological Seminary. After graduating from Chongshin, Professor Kim went to the USA for further studies. He studied first at Trinity Theological Divinity School and then Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. He majored in Biblical Interpretation and Systematic Theology. He completed his Ph. D. degree with the thesis dealing with the Ecclesiology of John G. Machen. He returned to Korea and began to teach at his alma mater. For 22 years, Professor Kim has done his best to introduce and teach ‘Historic Reformed Theology’ that he learnt and appropriated affluently throughout his life.
In second part, I tried to introduce his main theological concerns. I think his theological research centred on the continual quest and succession of the Korean Puritan Reformed Theology as much as he could. And then I pointed out the important loci of dogmatic theology, he was interested in, which are Ecclesiology, Pneumatology, and Eschatology. Another contributor will overview his Ecclesiology in detail. So I focused only on his Pneumatology and Eschatology. Prof. Kim has stood for the identification of the Baptism with the Holy Spirit and regeneration. In doing so, he has shown open mind to accept the significance of Christian experiences as the present and applying work of the Holy Spirit (focused on the believer’s union and communion with Christ by the operation of the Holy Spirit). And his position on the Eschatology is characterized as the Historical Premillennialism that he learnt from his professors, namely Hyung-nong Park and Yunesun Park in his earlier days.
