The present study was to investigate the effects of exercise participation on mentally retarded children`s learning preparation abilities and emotional behaviors. Subjects were 20 mentally retarded children attending H special school. Ten children were assigned to experimental group, and the other 10 children to control group. Questionnaires were used to measure subjects` learning preparation abilities and emotional behaviors. Data were analysed with t-test to confirm group differences. Results of this study were as follows: First, exercise participation had positive effects on mentally retarded children`s learning preparation abilities. Specifically, there were group differences in imitation, small and large locomotors, and eye·hand coordinations. Second, exercise participation had positive effects on mentally retarded children`s emotional behaviors as well. Exercise effectively increased mentally retarded children`s humors, and decreased their indfferences, fears, disappointments, and frustrations. It was found that exercise participation fostered mentally retarded children`s learning preparation abilities and changed their emotional behaviors positively. Therefore, exercise participation would be a valuable way to raise mentally retarded children`s learning preparation abilities. And, Considering their characteristics of passive participation spirit and lacking confidence, continuous studies are needed to encourage their expressions of positive emotion and communicative abilities.
