The purpose of this study was to verified the availability of the heart rate threshold (HRT) as the ventilatory threshold. Subjects were consisted of the college-aged male(N =8) sports students. Subjects were performed an incremental exercise test on a bicycle ergometer starting with an initial power output of 40W with intensity increments of 20W/min until the subjects were exhausted, showing a heart rate deflection point. Subjects then in random order performed two(speed/grade) treadmill tests, respectively. The HRT determination was done by computer aided deflection point regression analysis from dependence of functional measures on work road. The same computer algorithm(1) or visual analysis(4) were used for VT determination from the relationship between ventilation and oxygen uptake. The results of this study as follow; First, all subjects demonstrated an heart rate threshold on the tests. Second, there were no significant differences inside test protocols of the HR and VO_2 at the HRT. Third, heart rate at the ventilatory parameters (HR_VT) showed significant correlations with HR_HRT. These results suggest that HRT could be used as an method of determining ventilatory threshold in sports students. Specially, HR_VT method is the preferred method to predict heart rate threshold during treadmill incremental exercise. Thus, This HRT method may be attractive for the application in training intensity.
