In the midst of a rapid power shift in the Late Imperial China, Joseon had to experience literally the ‘collapse of the world.’ When Ming was replaced by Qing in the middle of the 17th century, and the traditional world order was dismantled as a result, Joseon too lost her identity. In the following centuries, the elite group of Joseon needed to put a great deal of efforts to reconstructing their nation’s status in the East Asian World. For those who strived to consolidate Joseon’s identity as the successor of Chinese civilization, a cultural mechanism had to be secured to strengthen their argument that Joseon preserved the core of Chinese culture, and it was also imperative for them to secure some proofs, which would indicate a significant level of cultural inheritance from China to Joseon.
Jo Heon(趙憲, 1544~1592), who visited Ming China as an envoy in 1574 and died in 1592 during the Japanese Invasions of Korea as a leader of a righteous army, was considered as a fine evidence of such cultural inheritance. Jo Heon witnessed the flourishing empire of the ‘Son of Heaven,’ and recorded what he had seen there in his memorials. Later, his writings were understood as his devotion to enlighten Joseon with the bright edification of China, and he was believed as the courier of Chinese civilization to Korea. As his work was reevaluated, even his death in the war was reviewed from a new perspective. His sacrifice in the battle of Geumsan, which was just regarded as one of the numerous deaths in the war, came to symbolize his faithful allegiance to the King and the Heavenly Emperor. He became the heroic defender of the Sino-centric world.
From the information gathered above, it is possible to conclude that this changing representation of Jo Heon built by Joseon elites in the course of the late Joseon Dynasty history, indeed reflected the shift in the zeitgeist of the time.
