Today we think of ‘qi(?)’ as the Chinese character meaning ‘qi(氣)’ or ‘strength’. In ancient China, however, ‘qi(?)’ was also used to mean ‘qi(氣)’ or ‘strength’. ‘qi(?)’ has shown up in the oracle bone script(Gapgolmun: 甲骨文). The character form was ★ㆍ★ and so on. The meaning of ‘qi(?)’ were ‘to stop’, ‘to arrive’, ‘to seek’, ‘to hope’, etc. In the Chinese bronze inscriptions and the unearthed literature from the Warring States period to Qin dynasty, ‘qi(?)’ was used to mean ‘to hope’, ‘to stop’, ‘to provide food’, ‘a person’s name’, ‘already’, ‘to arrive’, ‘to demand’, etc. This study examined how the characters were used in ancient China.
The characters that were used to mean ‘qi(氣)’ or ‘strength’ in the Warring States period were ‘qi(氣)’ㆍ‘★’ㆍ‘★(qi 氣)’ㆍ‘★(qi 氣)’ㆍ‘★(qi 氣)’ㆍ‘★(qi 氣)’ and so on. However, strating from the Han Dynasty, only ‘qi(氣)’ and ‘qi(?)’ were used to mean ‘qi(氣)’ or ‘strength’ and the following ‘★’ㆍ‘★(qi 氣)’ㆍ‘★(qi 氣)’ㆍ‘★(qi 氣)’ㆍ‘★(qi 氣)’ disappeared. Though ‘★(qi 氣)’ㆍ‘★’ㆍ‘★’ and were referred to as ‘qi(氣)’ in 『hanji?n(汗?)』 of the Song Dynasty, they seem to have disappeared at a certain point as they don’t appear in other literature.
During the Han Dynasty, ‘qi(?)’ meant ‘to beg’, ‘to lament’, ‘steam’, ‘strength’, ‘qi(氣)’, ‘smell’, ‘tone(??)’, etc. ‘qi(?)’ had completely different meanings in the Han Dynasty and the pre-Qin period. Only one meaning was used in both periods, which is ‘to beg’. When it comes to the meaning of ‘qi(?)’ from the oracle bone script(Gapgolmun: 甲骨文) to Qin dynasty, various meanings of ‘qi(?)’ were assigned to different words. ‘qi(訖)’ meant ‘to stop’, ‘qi(?)’ meant ‘to arrive’, ‘q?(乞)’ meant ‘to seek’, ‘to hope’, ‘to demand’. ‘qi(氣)’ㆍ‘xi(?)’ ㆍ‘xi(★)’ had the meaning of ‘to provide food’. But ‘already’ might have been interchangable because of the same pronunciation of ‘qi(?)’ and ‘ji(旣)’.
