This thesis is intended to shed light on how a Chinese conversation book, Standard Chinese (held by Yeoulwoon Library at Yonsei University) was adequate for language learners at the time of its publishing. Its adequacy is shown by dividing the book according to different scenes, analyzing the dialogues and comparing them with those of other Chinese conversation books of the later part of the Chosun Dynasty.
Standard Chinese is a Chinese conversation book in manuscript form written during the late Choseon Dynasty?at the end of Qing Dynasty, after 1858. While Chinese conversation books in manuscript were written without distinct divisions, the book is composed of ten units with a different subject in each unit. It is a relatively advanced form of Chinese conversation book.
Standard Chinese features two main characters, Mr. Kim and Mr. Wang, with the latter leading the conversation. The two set about a journey to Beijing together. Mr. Kim, a Korean, is engaged in a pharmaceutical business and Mr. Wang is a Chinese that has some sort of relationship with a shop named Chensaengdang located in Dongga of Beijing Fortress. Judging from the content of the book, the journey they undertook starting from Shandong continued to Tianjin, Beijing and back to Tianjin.
The book consists of 17 scenes and 20 subjects. The analysis of the dialogues and settings regarding greetings, meetings, cooking, major transportation means, purchase of goods and comment on the people shows what learners of Chinese language wanted to learn. The commonalities observed in 8 scenes shared by other Chinese conversation books written in those times testify to the mutual connection between Chinese conversation books of the period. Other subjects dealt with in Standard Chinese are unique with negative references to religious activities and business ethics.
