Shakespeare describes conflict of power in Julius Caesar which is based on Roman history. Particularly he focuses on the moment when Caesar tries to become the emperor by defeating Pompeius, one of three powers in triumvirate of Rome. The republicans of Rome revolt against his coming dictatorship that they have regarded as the barriers of ‘freedom’ and ‘justice.’ Cassius, a radical republican, induces Brutus to conspire the assassination of Caesar with other aristocrats for protecting democracy of Rome. This conflict of power which exists everywhere of human society can be applied to Foucault’s theory of ‘power’.
In this paper, I try to apply the aspects of ‘repetition’ and ‘difference’ to the theory of Deleuze. Caesar shows ‘repetition’ of self-righteousness and stubbornness in proceeding his enthronement of emperor, which comes to be the cause of Brustus and Cassius’ revolt against the dictatorship. However, Brutus and Cassius also imitate Caesar’s repetition after getting power by assassinating Caesar. They cannot prove any ‘difference’ from Caesar which has been suggested as the cause of their revolution. This should be criticized only as the imitation of Caesar’s negative repetition. Thus, by negative effects of their repetition, they show distrust and disharmony between them. In addition, Portia becomes the victim of Brutus’ ideology of ‘Roman’, which excludes women in deciding major issues even in the family.
Shakespeare shows very negative aspects of Roman mob in this work. They show periodical changeableness according to the change of power in Rome. However, their inconsistency can be evaluated as the possibility of ‘difference’ which we cannot find in repetition of Caesar and republicans. As a matter of fact, the people as the minority of power have developed into democratic citizens in modern society by overthrowing the dictatorship of kings and aristocrats in human history.
