In this paper, I investigated the humor fiction published in the Korean Colonial Period. Combining the tradition of humor and amodern fictional structure, the humor fiction was established as one of the popular narrative genres in the 1930s. The humor fiction basically included more than one requisite among such narrative elements as an oddball human character, a reversal closing structure, and a language amusement. This genre was mainly focused on common daily lives of an ordinary citizen who lived in the modernized city rather than focused on major social issues such as the state, class, the colonial situation, and so on.
Laughing at the happenings occurred fromthe unfamiliar and foreignmodern lifestyle or the exotic actions of oddball characters, the humor fiction formed a consensus of a new way of life with a distinctive sense of a narrative genre. The comical nature of this genre embraced the inevitable modernization trend. However, this genre also implied the cold satirical perspectives against the hypocrisy and falsehood of the people who made an advantage of modernization and against the irrational infrastructure in which honest learning and efforts could not be rewarded. However, being castrated the satirical characteristics and the function to find a new standards by making consensus with laughing, the humor fiction started to be transformed into a collaborative genre to the fascist regime in the late colonial era. Thus the later works of humor fiction genre generated awkward and melancholy smile, and the genre itself transformed into a narrative which created the forced smile demanding cheerful personality which cooperated with the fascist colonial system.
