This paper focuses on Haruki’s novel After Dark and its setting, the nocturnal city, which plays a central role in the story. The city is used to depict the dark side of modern society in the novel. Inspired by Alphaville, he novel shows what happens in the city at night. Contrary to the popular association of the night with fear, Haruki argues that it used to be a time for people to sleep, rest, and return to their true selves. The complexity of modern society, however, has arguably deprived the night of its goodness, transforming it into a time of abuse and inhumanity.
Moreover, Haruki shows that people living in mass society which is based on indirect contact through mass media, tend to become idle spectators. It is hard for them to truly communicate and connect with one another. He suggests that “memory” can be one of the solutions to these problems facing modern society. Haruki asks readers whether they would choose to remain spectators in the theater or if they would rather go out into the world, making direct contact and connecting with others.
