Given the vastly increasing market share of low cost carriers, this study explored the online shopping behavior of travelers using low cost carriers with a focus on diverse online shopping motivations. Four factors, financial advantages, convenience, information quality, and variety, were proposed as the main shopping motivations and their impact on search and purchase intentions were first examined. This study also investigated the moderating effect of traveler‘s air travel knowledge on the proposed relationships between the various online shopping motivations and purchase behaviors.
Results revealed that with the exception of variety, all other motivations were significant factors affecting both search and purchase intentions. Air travel knowledge was also found to influence the online shopping motivations-purchase behavior relationships. In general, high knowledgeable travelers motivated by convenience and information quality showed higher search and purchase intentions than low knowledgeable. Travelers motivated by financial advantages exhibited a higher search intention, but not purchase intention. However, travelers motivated by variety did not display any differences in purchase behavior regardless of air travel knowledge level.
