Briefly speaking, it is possible to say that there have appeared 3 major types of mission theologies. They are traditional mission theology emphasizing saving souls, ecumenical mission theology focusing humanization and shalom, and holistic mission theology stressing both saving souls and humanization. Considering the limitations of the holistic mission theology, this study tried to suggest an alternative mission theology so called ‘the fourth mission theology.’
The fourth mission theology has a lot of works to be developed since it is still in the beginning stage. At this point I was able to describe the major characteristics of the theology through this study as follow.
First, the fourth mission theology makes its concept clearly. In the case of holistic mission theology it makes the concept of mission through mixing the task of evangelism and ethical duties. But the fourth mission theology puts its focus only on world evangelization though it considers the dimension of ethical duty seriously.
Secondly, the fourth mission theology has openness and flexibility in the dimension of methods of mission, while it pursues clear focus in terms of goal of mission. As long as the way of mission is useful for achieving the goal of mission, it is widely opened to various methods of mission. In other words, the fourth mission theology is very flexible in the dimension of methodology of mission, while it is firm in the goal of mission.
Thirdly, the fourth mission theology values the church as a major agent of mission. The theology seriously recognizes the weakness of the church and this is why it joins the mission of God voraciously. However, it does not weaken the status of the church. Also it does not make a mistake of considering the world ignoring God as a partner of mission or breaking the boundary of the church and being absorbed into the world.
