This paper sought to examine changes in and overview of Chinese religion so as to analyze Chinese religious policies, with focus on Taoism. Compared with other religions, Taoism is currently experiencing positive development and changes in China, and offers advantages for grasping the situation of Chinese religions. With the examination of changes in Taoism, the direction and major agenda of the current Chinese religion policy can be examined.
Religious issues in China, which are very sensitive and cautious themes, given the nature of the socialist regime, should be prudently handled. Currently, China’s religious policy is based on socialist religious ideology, and all religious activities are controlled by the government. Also, problems related to religion are connected with political, social and racial problems.
Chinese Taoism experienced three crises from Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Revolution in the early modern period to the Cultural Revolution. The crises were severe enough to discontinue the Chinese Taoism system, but thanks to the efforts of Taoist priests, namely, Dosa (道士), and laymen, Taoism has survived until today. In addition, Taoism, which is a China-origin religion that is strongly connected with Chinese traditional folk faith, has long pervaded Chinese’s life, surviving despite long-time persecution.
Today, Chinese Taoism is developing in good relations with the Chinese government that implements strong religion control policy. China’s religious policy is of state-centered nature according to the socialist line, and Chinese Taoism, a China-origin religion, assumes unique peculiarities, and receives full support of the state. Also, nowadays, Chinese Taoism is a religion representing health and wellbeing, and has even accommodated and absorbed folk faith, thereby emerging as a new Chinese religion.
