This study starts from the fact that Area Studies has mostly produced the researches not on the region itself but on the individual nation state as a unit of analysis in spite of the emerging new regionalism such as EU and Asia-Pacific. This paradox of ‘Area Studies without the region’ partly resulted from the historical effects of the Cold War and US developmentalism. In Cold War era, the modernization theory played the role as a dominant paradigm in Area Studies and made the individual nation state basic unit of analysis. As a rule, a region was considered as a group of nations experiencing similar developing path. In contrast with this theoretical tradition, world-system analysis approaches to a certain region in terms of the regional aspects of the world-systemic dynamics. In particular, the macro history of East Asia can be summarized as the dissolution of the Chinese ‘World Empire’ under the 19th century British hegemony and the economic resurgence as a region driven by Japanese economic growth under the 20th century US hegemony. The emergence of a new region such as ‘Asia-Pacific’ can be understood as a result of the interaction between US hegemony and East Asian regionalism after the Cold War.
