The magneto-rheological behavior of micro magnetic particle dispersed in silicone oil has been characterized by a phenomenological model with the consideration of operating temperature, shear rate, powder volume percent and magnetic flux density. Magneto rheological fluid samples with different powder volume percents were prepared by adding ferrite powders in silicone oil. The shear viscosity of fluid samples were measured under three different temperatures (40oC, 70oC, and 110oC) and ten different magnetic flux density (0~100mT). The shear viscosity of magneto rheological fluid samples decreased with the operating temperature, and increased with the powder volume percent and the magnetic flux density. The fluid showed an upper limit to the increase of viscosity under the effect of external magnetic field. The maximum viscosity increment by external magnetic field also depends on the temperature, shear rate and powder volume percent. This complex magneto-rheological behavior under various operating conditions was characterized empirically by a rheological model. The developed model can well predict the viscosity change in the magneto rheological fluid.
