In the classic manors distributed on the northern fringe of the Paris Basin during the 9th century, the absolutely dominant mode of labor services took the form of week-labor services which had been the original mode of tenants’ labor services from slaves. This means that while the labor burden of the tenants from slaves remained the same as that of the original stage, the burden of tenants from freemen greatly increased and the mode of their labor had servile characteristic. On the other hand, in the eastern fringe of the Basin, the mode of labor services mostly took the combination form of allotment-labor service, which had been the original mode of tenants’ labor services from freemen, and week-labor service. This means that labor burden of all the tenants, whether from freemen or from slaves, increased sharply.
As we can see in the polyptyque of Weissenburg Abbey, although the mode of labor services applied to the slaves’ holdings had absolutely taken the combination form in the 9th century, the mode in the form week-labor services was overwhelming among slaves’ holdings of 10th century. It seems that the predominance of week-labor mode remained until the first half of 11th century. But unlike slaves’ holdings, the combination mode of the labor services remained dominant among unidentified manses in 10th century, if not as high as in 9th century, and appeared to be pretty high since then. However, labor services were increasingly replaced by money-rent since 10th century.
