The purpose of this study was to empirically examine the structural relationship between the factors which play key roles in influencing the rehabilitation of persons with severe mental disorders. Once five latent factors were derived, two competing models were established and analyzed in an attempt to determine the better model for understanding the process in which social adjustment and recovery take place. The research data was gathered by collecting self-administered questionnaires from 753 service users recruited from sixty-two mental health organizations in South Korea. The questionnaire inquired about service recipients` skills, social support, stigma, recovery, social adjustment, as well as mental health status and socio-demographic profile. The results showed that the "Recovery-Mediated Model", which hypothesized that the individuals` skills, social support and stigma exercise the largest influence over social adjustment, was adopted as the better model. Specifically, the skills were the key factor which exercised the most direct influence on the individuals` recovery, while also having the most indirect influence on their social adjustment. Social support did not have any significant direct influence on recovery and social adjustment, but had an indirect influence on them. On the other hand, stigma did not play a noticeable role in recovery and social adjustment either directly or indirectly. Several intervention strategies for improving mental health outcomes were presented.
