The social costs of allergic diseases are immense in contemporary South Korea. The environmental diseases, like allergies, may not only affect people’s physical health directly, but also aggravate our mental conditions and social well-being. Although allergies are common diseases caused by various factors, residential environments have increasingly become significant factors in recent decades. In this regard, this paper investigates the occurrence of allergic diseases caused in relation to housing conditions and residents’ consciousness of environmental diseases.
The survey result showed that 85% of the respondents have suffered from any type of allergic diseases. By the types of diseases, headaches were found to be most common, and allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis and dermatitis followed. Asthma was relatively less common. It was also found that most of the respondents lived in multifamily houses, and more than 50% of them lived in houses 10 years old or more. This result suggests that the design guidelines to alleviate Sick Building Syndrome be developed for not only new buildings, but also old and deteriorating houses.
With regard to the efforts to cure the diseases, ‘seeing a doctor/taking medicine’ was considered effective in general, and the ‘improvement of indoor air quality’ and ‘house cleaning’were also found to be helpful. The findings showed that many respondents have tried to enhance the indoor air quality by improving ventilation equipment and using environmentfriendly building materials.
The respondents were found to be highly conscious of the impact of residential environments on allergic diseases and wish to improve their housing conditions to alleviate the allergic symptoms. The intention to improve housing conditions for better air quality was higher among those with the history of allergic diseases than those with no history of such illness.
The prevention of allergic diseases presumably caused by residential environments is conducive to enhancing residents’ physical health. The findings of this study call for more collaborative works between the medical field and the architectural field. As an effective way to do that, researchers in the architectural field may visit the houses of the people with allergic diseases and investigate how much the residents are exposed to the environmental factors which can possibly cause allergies. In the medical field, practitioners may examine how the residents’bodies respond to those environmental elements. Therefore, future research should be developed, based on more accurate medical data, in a way which provides substantive recommendations to improve the housing environment for the prevention of allergic diseases.
