The purpose of this study is to advance contemporary literary criticism in particular, with the help of Mah?y?na-especially Zen-Buddhist thought. Not to be simply a study that merely ends up introducing Asian thought or tries to merge it into Western metaphysics, it attests how contemporary critical theory can benefit greatly from Buddhist philosophy, especially in regard to the thought of the perfect emptiness and infinity that has been explored in Buddhism throughout such a long history. What we need in twenty-first century critical theory is a development of thought in the direction of true ethics that would awaken us to the need for a sense of genuine, non-representational transcendence without reloading the tyrannical totality that has been innate in modernism and its notion of Enlightenment. The thoughts on nonrepresentational transcendence in postmodern ethics and the Buddhist philosophy of Emptiness are examined in the light of the criticism of literature and the arts.
